September 21, 2016

Pets in need of some pampering now have a cozy spot to get dolled up in downtown Milton.

Georgetown resident Mary LeCates recently opened a second A Comfy Pet Grooming Salon location on Federal Street in Milton, after years of tending to hundreds of pets at a larger salon on Route 24 in Angola, which will remain open.

Although she wasn’t looking for a new space, LeCates said when she stumbled upon the quaint storefront in historic Milton, she was in love.

“I just jumped right in and did it,” she said. “And the people here have been so kind and wonderful. The town is so supportive.”

LeCates offers basic grooming services – bathing, trimming, nail clipping and ear cleaning – as well as dental cleaning without anesthesia for dogs. Cats also are accepted as grooming clients, and LeCates offers some fur coloring and adding feathers to fur for sassier clients.

“Just like you and me when we get our hair and makeup done, we feel good,” she said. “It's the same with pets, and I just love making them feel good.”

Pets also get a mini massage during their baths, and LeCates offers 20-minute massages as an add-on service.

“I like my pets to be comfy,” she said. “That's important to me. The massages are very important: It gets the blood going, and it's great for dogs that have arthritis. It keeps them flexible, mobile and it relaxes them.”

LeCates has been in the grooming business for nearly 30 years, after settling in Delaware and learning the trade from a local groomer. She built her Route 24 location, formerly called Bayside Grooming, about 8 years ago and also works as a subcontractor for Pet Value in Georgetown. She has developed close relationships with her clients – both human and furry – and adds a personal touch to her services. A monthly drawing offers a free pet-centered gift basket for customers at either pet salon.

“Everything I've done in the past 20 years has been geared toward dogs and cats,” she said. “I wouldn't want to be doing anything else. This is my passion. I love the pets.”
