New Road needs to be widened now

October 20, 2017

I appreciate Nick De Cerchio taking the time to write a letter to Mayor Ted Becker and the Cape Gazette concerning the safety of bicycles on New Road. Based on the tone of his letter: "[cars] had to repeatedly stop for the bicycles until they could maneuver around them," makes me think he is one of the impatient drivers who feels he should not be inconvenienced by waiting mere seconds so he can share the road with bicycles.

Also, as he is bringing this matter to the personal attention of the mayor, I have to conclude the bicycles he encountered were in the City of Lewes limits where the speed limit for vehicles is 25 mph, so what's the hurry, Mr. De Cerchio?

He states he is a Lewes resident and bicyclist. I wonder if he sees the bicycle symbols right in the middle of the travel lanes on Savannah Road.

This signifies bicycles are permitted to ride in the road. The bicyclists he encountered were following the rules of the road. My family always rides single file on New Road. As far as Mr. De Cerchio's question of "with so many bike trails and so many roads designed for bike riders in this area, why do some need to ride on New Road?" Personally, I need to ride on New Road for ingress and egress to my residence. I see no reason to drive to a nearby bike trail when I am going bike riding.

I agree with his comment about doing something before an accident occurs. Considering there are more housing units planned for this area, the county should make the improvements and widen New Road now, as this situation will only get worse.
