Flu virus works through Rehoboth Elementary
Rehoboth Elementary School has reported a higher-than-usual number of students missing school due to the flu in the month of February. Principal Susan Donahue said custodial staff is cleaning and disinfecting all common areas during the day. She said students are being encouraged by teachers and other staff to wash their hands often with soap, and surfaces such as desks, chairs and keyboards are being cleaned regularly. With confirmed cases, Donahue said the school nurse reminds the families of sick students that their child needs to be fever free for 24 hours without medication before returning to school.

Rehoboth takes reins on fireworks
The Rehoboth Beach commissioners unanimously approved a measure that would make the city the main presenter of the annual Fourth of July fireworks. The city would take over the function of Rehoboth Beach Main Street, which has announced its disbanding on Friday, March 31. Main Street's fireworks fund has left enough money available to fund the show for the next three to four years, city and Main Street officials have said. The city would accept, but not solicit donations to help pay for the fireworks.

Commissioner Kathy McGuiness at first tried to postpone the vote because, she said, there were people interested in resurrecting Main Street. McGuiness was one of the founders of Main Street 20 years ago. Mayor Sam Cooper rejected McGuiness's request because there was no certainty at this time that a new Main Street would be forming. He said if an organization wanted to take over in the future, the city would consider it. McGuiness said she did not have a problem with the city running the fireworks.

A public hearing on the permit modification will not be held unless the DNREC secretary receives a request within 15 days of Feb. 16. Hearing requests must be made in writing and should state the nature of the issues raised.
