Developer seeks zoning change in Sussex
Two Farms LLC, the developer of Royal Farms stores on the Eastern Shore, has filed a change of zone application from AR-1, agricultural-residential, to CR-1, commercial-residential, for a 3-acre parcel at the intersection of Route 9 and Gravel Hill Road near Georgetown. At its March 9 meeting, the county's planning and zoning commission deferred on a vote. If the zoning change is approved by the county, the developer will return to the planning and zoning commission with a site plan for the parcel. County council's public hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 9, in the county administration building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown.

Days Inn plans get preliminary approval
At its March 9 meeting, Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission approved a preliminary site plan for a 60-room, four-story Days Inn hotel along Parsonage Road off Route 1 near Rehoboth Beach. The final site plan must be submitted to the commission for review and approval.

Cell tower planned for Dairy Farm Road
Cellco Partnership can move forward with construction of a 140-foot telecommunications tower along Dairy Farm Road once state and county agency approvals are acquired. At its March 9 meeting, the Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission approved a preliminary site plan for the project pending those approvals. The tower was approved in December by the county's board of adjustment.

Inland Bays advisory committee to meet
The Delaware Center for the Inland Bays Citizens Advisory Committee will meet at 5 p.m., Thursday, March 16, at the center's office on Inlet Road in Rehoboth Beach. The meeting will include a presentation from Danielle Swallow, project manager for the state's Delaware Coastal Programs Resilient Community Partnership, on sea level rise and flooding in the Inland Bays, as well as other business items. 36th District Dems to hold March 20 meeting
Registered Democrats in the Sussex County 36th Representative District are encouraged to attend the next regular monthly meeting being held at Arena's Restaurant in Milford Monday, March 20, at 6:30 p.m. Guest speakers for the evening will be Alanna Mozeik, aide to Gov. John Carney, who will talk on tips to give people who may want to run for office. Joe-Anne Corwin will hold a workshop on committee strategies in decision making.

Information will be given on the Sussex County Democratic Committee who will hold their election March 27 during the Sussex County Caucus. The caucus is at 7 p.m., at Party Headquarters, 10 West Pine St. in Georgetown. All representative district committee members are eligible to vote at the caucus.

The committee will discuss the Spring Dinner of the Sussex County Dems to be held April 22 at Baywood Country Club, 32267 Clubhouse Way, Long Neck, with newly elected U.S. congressional Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester as guest speaker. Tickets are $60 and will be available for purchase at the meeting. Other business will include the chairperson's report, establishing and defining roles of standing committees, discussing recruitment and educational materials to be developed by the district committee.

Pettyjohn sets coffee with constituents
Sen. Brian Pettyjohn, R-Georgetown, invites his constituents to join him for coffee and conversation from 9 to 10 a.m., Saturday, March 18, at Jimmy's Grille, 18541 S. Main St., Bridgeville. Pettyjohn encourages District 19 residents to stop by to ask a question or share a concern on issues relating to the district or state government. He plans to bring attendees up to date on the current legislative session as well as any pending projects in the district. Pettyjohn represents the 19th Senatorial District, which includes all or parts of Georgetown, Bridgeville, Seaford, Millsboro, Greenwood, Ellendale, Harbeson, Milton and Long Neck. Lewes annexation committee to meet
The Lewes Annexation Regulation Review Committee will meet at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 14, at city hall. The group will discuss the positive aspects of annexing into the City of Lewes. For more information, call city hall at 302-645-7777.

Sussex officials award councilmanic grants
Sussex County Council awarded the following councilmanic grants during its March 7 meeting: $1,000 to Greater Millsboro Chamber of Commerce for fireworks for the Stars & Stripes event; $1,000 to Mid-Atlantic Orchestra for concert series operating expenses; and $2,000 to Ocean View Historical Society to support a capital campaign to construct the Coastal Towns Museum.

Foundation to host forum organizer
D.C. Kuhns, executive director and founder of the EDEN Delmarva organization, will give a presentation at the Tuesday, March 14 Inland Bays Foundation meeting, held at the South Coastal Library in Bethany Beach at 6 p.m. Kuhns will announce plans for the Second Annual Clean Water Forum to be held May 12 at the Atlantic Sands Hotel in Rehoboth Beach.

The forum will address pollution in the Chesapeake Bay and Inland Bays. Building on last year's success, the 2017 forum will gravitate around four major areas: agriculture, aquaculture, clean water in Delaware surface waters and wastewater/septic systems in rural Delaware. Kuhns is a respected expert in the field of renewable energy with 20 years' experience working with biomass, wind, water and solar as clean alternatives for the generation of electricity. Kuhns has worked with other partners in the management and ownership of four public companies, including a global wind development company. He specializes in entrepreneurship, project development, mergers and acquisition, and business and financial consulting - all centering around renewable energy. Owen, Lee file for BPW election
Lewes Board of Public Works incumbents D. Preston Lee and A. Thomas Owen have each filed to run for re-election to the board. Lee was first elected to the board in 2011 and serves as vice president. He is a lifelong resident of Delaware, graduating from the University of Delaware with a degree in civil engineering. He is a registered professional engineer in Delaware and surrounding states. Lee and his wife have owned homes in Lewes since 1988 and have been full-time residents for more than 10 years. Owen was elected to the board in 2013 and serves as assistant treasurer.

After serving in the U.S. Army and achieving the rank of first lieutenant, Owen worked in insurance underwriting. He started his own company in 1973 and grew the business over 30 years. He retired to Lewes with his wife in 2006. Anyone wishing to run for a seat on the BPW has until 4:30 p.m., Thursday, April 6, to file the necessary paperwork at the BPW Office, 107 Franklin Ave., Lewes.
