Hands Across the Sand slated May 19
Hands Across the Sand, an international demonstration in its eighth year, has scheduled an event in Rehoboth from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Saturday, May 19, on the beach in front of Wilmington Avenue.
The event is a public demonstration in opposition to offshore drilling along Delaware's coastline. Participants throughout the world are expected to hold hands at the shoreline for 15 minutes.

Rehoboth streets committee to meet May 18
The Rehoboth Streets and Transportation Committee is scheduled to meet at 3 p.m., Friday, May 18, in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave. The agenda calls for discussion on bicycle signage between the Junction and Breakwater Trail and Gordons Pond Trail, suggestions for bicyclists entering and exiting north Boardwalk, and additional signage throughout town. Rehoboth bandstand committee to meet May 18
The Rehoboth Bandstand/Convention Hall/Special Events Committee is scheduled to meet at 9:30 a.m., Friday, May 18, in the the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave. The agenda calls for discussion of a new wedding form, and an overall plan moving forward with convention hall use. Permit of compliance hearing set May 18
Rehoboth commissioners will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m., Friday, May 18, in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave., to consider a permit of compliance request by Michael Lankford to operate a new restaurant with patio and brewery-pub known as Beach Nomad Brews. Rehoboth Board of Commissioners to meet May 18
The Rehoboth Board of Commissioners has scheduled a meeting for 7 p.m., Friday, May 18, in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave. The agenda calls for possible approval of the committee handbook, a possible change to code regarding contractor parking, and further discussion of bus drop-offs. Greater Lincoln Civic Association to meet
The Greater Lincoln Civic Association will meet at 7 p.m., Thursday, May 17, in Lincoln Community Hall on Johnson Road. Area legislators have been invited to the meeting to talk about this year's legislative agenda. Issues include school safety, gun control, the opioid epidemic, abortion and the budget. Baker endorsed by Eastern Sussex Dems
The Eastern Sussex Democratic Club has announced its endorsement of Democrat David Baker for the 6th Senatorial District, which includes all or parts of Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Lewes, Angola, and Milton. In a prepared statement, Baker said the Eastern Sussex Democratic Club stands for democratic principles and that he was honored by its endorsement. The district, which moved from Northern New Castle County to eastern Sussex County during redistricting in 2012, has been represented by incumbent Republican Ernie Lopez since 2012. Lopez has filed for re-election.

Carper files for re-election to Senate
U.S. Sen. Tom Carper, a Democrat from Wilmington, filed for re-election May 7. He has held the seat since 2001. Two other people have filed paperwork challenging Carper. Nadine Frost, a Libertarian from Wilmington, filed her paperwork March 28. Demitri G. Theodoropoulos, a Newark resident and Green Party member, filed his paperwork April 2. Sussex County Councilman Rob Arlett, a Republican, has announced his intention to run for the seat, but as of deadline May 14, he had not filed his paperwork.

The deadline for candidates to file for a statewide office and all other offices is noon, Tuesday, July 10. The statewide primary election is Thursday, Sept. 6. The deadline to register to vote in the primary is Saturday, Aug. 11. The statewide general election is Tuesday, Nov. 6. The deadline to register to vote in the general election is Saturday, Oct. 13.

Dewey Charter Committee to meet
The Dewey Beach Charter and Code Review Ad Hoc Committee meeting will be held at 4 p.m., Thursday, May 17, at the Dewey Beach Lifesaving Station, 1 Dagsworthy Ave., Dewey. The committee will discuss and possibly vote on draft amendments to all sections of the town charter for recommendations to the town council.

Crossing removal closes Kings Highway
The Delaware Department of Transportation announced to motorists that Delaware Coast Line Railroad is removing their railroad crossing on US 9/Kings Highway between Devries Circle and Beach Plum Drive. During the removal of the railroad crossing, US 9/Kings Highway will be closed.
The work began May 14, and is anticipated to be completed by 11:59 p.m., Friday, May 18, but could be delayed due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

Detour routes:
Southbound: US 9/Kings Highway to East Savannah Road onto Cape Henlopen Drive to Theodore C. Freeman Memorial Highway and return to US 9/Kings Highway.
Northbound: US 9/Kings Highway to Theodore C. Freeman Memorial Highway to Cape Henlopen Drive onto East Savannah Road and back to US 9/Kings Highway.

Contractor chosen for Dewey dune crossings
During its April 21 meeting, Dewey town council voted in favor of vendor AccessRec to provide dune crossing mats for 17 streets in Dewey.
The New Jersey-based company, which installed the mat at the lifesaving station's dune crossing last summer, came in with a low bid of $98,350.
The town has about half the project funded – $35,000 from the town and $20,000 in donations. As part of the approval, commissioners agreed no money would be spent until all funding was secure. Commissioners also tasked Town Manager Scott Koenig with trying to explore grant opportunities. The town is still accepting donations from businesses or individuals.
