Offshore wind working group meetings set
Delaware's Offshore Wind Working Group will host two public workshops in May for input on the working group's draft recommendations to the governor. Workshops will be held at 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 29, William Penn High School Auditorium, 713 E. Basin Road, New Castle; and Thursday, May 31, South Coastal Library, 43 Kent Ave., Bethany Beach.

The workshops will begin with a brief update on draft recommendations that were developed at the working group's April 23 meeting. The public may then offer comments on the draft recommendations. The draft recommendations, along with briefing materials, public comments, and additional resources are posted at www.de.gov/offshorewind. Sussex Memorial Day service on The Circle
The Sussex County Memorial Day Service will take place at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, May 27, on The Circle in Georgetown. The keynote speaker will be Rear Admiral Donald Sturtz, USN (Ret.), a former Navy aviator and navy medical doctor, serving in Vietnam. Memorial wreathes will be placed by local veterans' groups and service organizations. Assisting will be members of Boy Scout Troop 95. Environmental and Racial Justice Forum set
One of the often-forgotten aspects of racial justice is the impact of the environmental crisis (toxic waste, pollution, poor water quality) on communities of color. On Tuesday, June 12, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., the Alliance for Racial Justice will host an interactive presentation on the intersection of environmental and racial justice. Lisa Locke, executive director of Delaware Interfaith Power & Light, will lead a discussion on respecting and caring for ecological systems, and respecting and caring for each other, specifically through the lens of climate change. The event will be held at Heritage Hall, located at the Trinity Faith Christian Center, 15516 New Road in Lewes.

Milton Memorial Day celebration set
Milton will host its Memorial Day remembrance ceremony at 11 a.m., Monday, May 28, in Milton Memorial Park. Town administrative offices will be closed on Memorial Day.

Bill to fund school safety introduced
A bill that would create a $65 million fund for school safety projects was introduced May 23 in the state Legislature.
Sen. Dave Lawson, R-Clayton, said the $65 million would be one-time funding, and the money would be used for school safety improvements until depleted. Extra money would not be returned to the general fund, he said. Public and charter schools could apply for funding for capital projects that improve safety such as installation of bullet resistant glass, screening for individuals, bookbags or containers entering the school, or installing key-card entrances and video cameras.

Sussex County Council not meeting May 29
Sussex County Council will not meet Tuesday, May 29, in observance of Memorial Day. The next regularly scheduled meeting is at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 5, in the county administration building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown.

Sussex County offices closed Memorial Day
Sussex County government offices will be closed Monday, May 28, for the Memorial Day holiday. Offices will reopen at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 29.

Lewes City Hall, BPW closed May 28
The offices of Lewes City Hall and the Board of Public Works will be closed Monday, May 28, in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. Both offices will reopen with regular hours Tuesday, May 29.

Lewes Memorial Day Parade May 28
There will be a Memorial Day parade in Lewes at 11 a.m., Monday, May 28. The parade will begin at the intersection of Kings Highway and Savannah Road and proceed toward the beach along Savannah Road to American Legion Post 17 on American Legion Road.

Dewey special board meeting set May 29
Dewey Beach Town Council will hold a special town commissioners' meeting and executive session Tuesday, May 29, at the Dewey Beach Lifesaving Station, 1 Dagsworthy Ave. Executive session convenes at 10:30 a.m., with the special town commissioners' meeting set to start at 11 a.m. Commissioners will discuss and possibly vote to retain the professional services of Fred Townsend, Esq., of Hudson, Jones, Jaywork & Fisher as town solicitor.

Rescue exercise set for Lewes May 26
Sussex County Technical Rescue will conduct a structural collapse rescue exercise in Lewes, Saturday, May 26. The Sussex County Technical Rescue Team is made up of firefighters and public safety members throughout Sussex County. The team conducts rescue services in high-angle and low-angle rope climbing, confined space, trench, swift water, structural collapse, and large animal rescues, among others.

On Saturday, at 8 a.m., the Sussex County Technical Rescue Team will conduct a structural collapse rescue exercise within unoccupied homes in the 300 block of Monroe Avenue. This will be the first of two training exercises, with the second taking place later in the year involving structural burn rescue training. The homes are owned and donated for these training exercises by local real estate developers Bill and Bryce Lingo, and the homes are located adjacent to the new Showfield community, Lewes. Sussex council awards nonprofit grants
Sussex County Council awarded the following councilmanic grants during its May 15 meeting: $1,000 to Georgetown-Millsboro Rotary for its Flags for Heroes project; $3,500 to Gumboro Community Association for operating costs; $500 to American Legion Auxiliary Unit 28 for its annual poppy fund; and $3,000 to Ocean View Historical Society for the Coastal Towns Museum project. At its May 22 meeting, Sussex County Council awarded the following councilmanic grants: $2,500 to Seaford District Library for security cameras and $1,000 to Greenwood Police Department for National Night Out.

Pipe failure requires road closure
Crossroad pipe failure requires a portion of Route 30/Gravel Hill Road between Huff Road and Shingle Point Road, Milton, to be closed until 7 p.m., Tuesday, June 5, pending weather. Detour signage has been posted for motorists.
