Arlett supports defunding of services
In a press release May 25, Sussex County Councilman and candidate for U.S. Senate Rob Arlett, a Republican, said he supports President Donald Trump's efforts to restrict federal funding to family planning programs with a new rule that will prohibit federal funds under Title X from subsidizing abortions with taxpayer dollars.

"Many Americans strongly object to their tax dollars being used to fund abortions and yet they had no one to support them in their opposition until President Trump courageously stepped forward and directed his administration to take action to protect the life of the unborn," said Arlette, who goes on to question Sen. Tom Carper. "Senator Carper's statement that the president's actions to protect life are 'purely a political attack' is misguided and reprehensible."

Arlett's comments come three days after Carper criticized Trump's plan to change how Title X family planning funds are awarded by defunding providers who provide or refer patients to abortion services.

In a prepared statement May 22, Carper said, "Today's announcement is a purely political attack on federally funded health care centers, where nearly 4 million women and men receive basic preventative health care, including cancer screenings, birth control, sexually transmitted infection screenings, pregnancy testing and well-women exams." As of deadline May 28, Arlett had not filed his candidacy paperwork with the state.

The deadline for candidates to file for a statewide office and all other offices is noon, Tuesday, July 10. The statewide primary election is Thursday, Sept. 6. The deadline to register to vote in the primary is Saturday, Aug. 11. The statewide general election is Tuesday, Nov. 6. The deadline to register to vote in the general election is Saturday, Oct. 13.

Telephone solicitors not from fire companies
The Sussex County Volunteer Firefighters' Association, in conjunction with the Delaware Volunteer Firefighters' Association, is advising residents and businesses throughout Delaware regarding a telephone campaign currently soliciting donations for a "firefighters' relief fund." This group is not associated with, nor do they represent Delaware's fire service and its more than 7,000 members statewide.

As is often the case, these phony solicitors are able to use a local phone number to display on the caller ID of the recipient's telephone, which can lead people to believe that the caller is a local individual or group. Delaware fire, rescue and EMS organizations do not solicit donations over the telephone, nor do they contact residents or businesses regarding fire prevention or other matters by telephone. If such a call is received, hang up. Above all else, do not make a donation to anyone claiming to represent Delaware firefighters who asks for money over the telephone.

Delaware's fire companies do request the support of residents and businesses through annual fund drive campaigns and greatly appreciate the support of neighbors who contribute to their local volunteer fire companies. The Sussex County Volunteer Firefighters' Association represents the members of the 21 volunteer fire companies and two ambulance companies serving Sussex County.
