Oak Orchard forum on flooding, drainage set
Rep. Ruth Briggs King, R-Georgetown, and Sen. Gerald Hocker, R-Ocean View, are holding a public forum in Oak Orchard to hear from residents about any drainage concerns they may have. The meeting is set for 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, Oct. 24, at the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company, 32628 Oak Orchard Rd., Millsboro. Officials with the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control and the Delaware Department of Transportation will be on hand to answer questions.

The meeting will give state officials the opportunity to provide a status report on the work that has occurred over the past three years as it relates to addressing these drainage and flooding issues. In 2013, Briggs King and Hocker secured state funding for DNREC to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the problems related to improper drainage, often the result of tidal and storm-related flooding. The purpose of the study was to review the history of drainage/flooding in the area, seek public input, identify solutions, prioritize them and develop conceptual designs with cost estimates for the high-priority solutions.

The event is being held underneath Freeman Highway Bridge, right next to the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal, weather permitting. Parking is on Schley Avenue. Handicap parking will be available under the bridge. Folks are encouraged to bike or walk to the event on the Junction and Breakwater Trail.

A reception will immediately following the event at the Dogfish Inn, corner of Gills Neck Road and Savannah Road. In case of inclement weather, the event will take place at Dogfish Head Inn.
Short remarks will be made by DelDOT Secretary Jennifer Cohan, Sen. Ernie Lopez, Rep. Steve Smyk and Rep. Pete Schwartzkopf, who provided funding for this plan. Staff time was contributed by Delaware Greenways.

This master plan is the first in a series for the Lewes byway, and should be very helpful in achieving a collaborative approach to changing land use and transportation context decisions that preserve the integrity and context of these two historic roads. The purpose of this landscape master plan is to establish a vision for the desired character of these two roadways and create a context sensitive Gateway to Lewes at the entrance to the byway.
