Rehoboth offices to close for Columbus Day
The Rehoboth Beach administrative offices will close Monday, Oct. 9, in observance of Columbus Day. Residential and commercial trash pickup will go on as scheduled. For more information, call the Communications Department at 227-2772.
Special Dewey board meeting set Oct. 7
Dewey Beach commissioners have scheduled an executive session and special meeting for 9 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 7, in the Dewey Beach Life Saving Station, 1 Dagsworthy Ave. Following the closing of executive session, the agenda calls for a discussion and possible vote to enter into a separation agreement with Town Manager Marc Appelbaum.

Dewey Beach Town Hall, 105 Rodney Ave., will be open on Columbus Day, Monday, Oct. 9. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Fundraiser to benefit Las Vegas victims Oct. 7
The Pond Bar & Grill in Rehoboth is teaming up with The Clifford Keith Band to host Lend a Hand to Las Vegas, a fundraiser benefiting the victims of the Las Vegas shooting, beginning at 10 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 7. Clifford Keith, lead singer of the band, said The Pond, 3 S. 1st St., Rehoboth, has been a staple of the Coastal Delaware music scene, and they jumped at the chance to raise funds with the band. "We're huge music fans and love country," said Keith. "It could have been any of us or our friends at that concert. We wanted to help any way we could and this feels like the right thing to do." A portion of the sales from the evening, along with raffles, prizes, and more, will benefit victims of the Las Vegas shooting. "We love this community. Come on out, share a little love with Vegas right now and show them we care," said Keith.
Lewes comp plan public hearing Oct. 10
Lewes Mayor and City Council will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 10, to get input on whether it is in the public's interest to adopt the 2015 comprehensive plan. For more information, call city hall at 302-645-7777.
Lewes City Hall, BPW closed Oct. 9
The offices at Lewes City Hall and the Lewes Board of Public Works will be closed Monday, Oct. 9, in observance of Columbus Day. Offices will reopen with regular hours Tuesday, Oct. 10.
Sussex approves Tucks Road sewer expansion
Sussex County Council on Oct. 3 unanimously approved an expansion of the Sussex County Unified Sanitary Sewer District to include about two dozen residences on Tucks Road and Abby Way, as well as parcels fronting Route 24 between Branch Road and Tucks Road in Long Neck.
The expansion was proposed as the county works on the Branch and Autumn roads design nearby, across from the Walgreens on Route 24. That project was initiated as part of the Deerbrooke expansion in fall 2015.
Residents affected by the expansion will pay no connection charge, but will be charged $540 annually in addition to the estimated $286 annual service charge. The $540 sewer-assessment charge is fixed for the term of the financing, which Sussex County Engineer Hans Medlarz said could be up to 40 years. Residents also will have to pay out-of-pocket for plumbing costs to hook their homes up to the new line, which Medlarz estimated would cost about $1,250 to $1,500, depending on the complexity of the individual project.
Medlarz said residents will have about three years before they are required to hook into the sewer expansion. For more information, call the county at 302-855-7700.
Sussex supports Stockings for Soldiers
Sussex County government has joined Sussex County Volunteer Delaware 50+ and the state office of volunteerism to collect donated items for deployed service men and women. A donation box for Stockings for Soldiers can be found in the county administrative offices building on The Circle in Georgetown, where residents also can find a shopping list for deployed men, women and K9 soldiers. Donations will be accepted through Tuesday, Oct. 31.
Ellendale water district hearing set for Oct. 7
A public hearing regarding the Ellendale Water District will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Ellendale Fire Company at 302 Main St. in Ellendale. County officials will present information on the proposed district, and residents are invited to ask questions.
Sussex County Council meets Oct. 10
Sussex County Council will meet at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 10, in council chambers at 2 The Circle in Georgetown. Council will hold a public hearing on an ordinance to add equivalent dwelling units as a method of calculating sewer or water assessments. Council also will discuss a proposed ordinance relating to the prohibition of firearms in county buildings, an economic development update and other business. UDPATE: Sussex 911 Awareness Day postponed
The Sussex County Emergency Operations Center has postponed its 18th annual 911 Awareness Day. The event, scheduled for Oct. 12, will now be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 18, at the public safety complex at 21911 Rudder Lane near Georgetown. The annual event gives the public a behind-the-scenes look at what happens at the center and in public safety on a 24-7 basis. Greyhounds Reach the Beach Oct. 5-8
