I know that the state has wasted, continues to waste money on animal control in sums of millions. If the state needs funds, start looking for waste here.
During Markell's term, Sen. Blevins was able to designate $3 million startup cost for the Office of Animal Welfare. This happened in 2012 to take over animal control in our state and make our animal shelters be responsible for the animal shelters in our state to care for animals homeless in our state.
Keep in mind, we already had a successful office providing these services. However some government officials such as Gov. Markell, Levy Court, Sen. Blevins were listening to a handful of individuals that believed in a dream of no-kill to animals.
These government offices listed were presented with figures that proved that no-kill would not be cost effective nor provide results in over animal population. After a full year of operations, how is it going?
Fact of the matter is, it is costing the state much more money to implement dog control than before the new office. OAW supposedly told the state legislators that this program would cost the state nothing - that they would collect the money from the counties and administer it with those funds. Such as, to start the office, personnel, etc. This is where the $3 million came into play.
And of course, we have no information on figures, etc. since OAW took over. Because they are the ones that are privy to that information, but it is all a secret. You know the term fox watching the hen house. That is what we have.
This so needs to be looked into: $84,000 Sen. Blevins (after not getting re-elected ) her salary for director of the office she started.
Could help with another correction officer's salary along with the increased cost of animal control we are now paying annually.
