Nominations for Governor's Youth Volunteer Service Award due April 7

March 25, 2017

Nominations for the Governor's Youth Volunteer Service Awards are being accepted by the State Office of Volunteerism through Friday, April 7. These awards recognize the important contributions Delaware's youth volunteers, age 17 and younger, make to their communities. Award recipients will be honored at a May ceremony at Polytech Adult Education Conference Center in Woodside.

"Every day, Delaware's young volunteers contribute to their communities, making them better places for all of us," Gov. John Carney said. "Through their commitments, these young people are developing what I hope will be a lifetime passion for public service and an understanding that a successful future will be measured by the difference they make in our society."

The awards honor the volunteer efforts of young Delawareans in the areas of arts and culture, community service, education, environment, health, human needs, public service and social justice/advocacy. Volunteer efforts must have been performed during 2016, although prior volunteer activity can be highlighted to show long-term commitment. To be eligible, individuals must have been enrolled as secondary school students for the 2015-16 academic year and be 17 or younger.

"It is that time of the year when we get the opportunity to honor and recognize the exceptional contributions in service by youth to local communities throughout the state of Delaware," said Luz Vasquez-Guzman, executive director of the Governor's Commission on Community and Volunteer Service, and senior administrator of the State Office of Volunteerism. "The standard is high because many have dedicated countless hours and resources to the causes they are passionate about. We look forward to recognizing and meeting these outstanding young people who have positively impacted their communities."
