Northbeach 5K attracts 282 Sunday runners

The Northbeach 5K is the second-oldest race in the Ten Sisters of Dewey Beach Run/Walk Series, with the the Bottle & Cork 10-Miler being the oldest.  

Under clear skies June 26, 282 runners participated, with 19-year-old Stephen Garrett winning in 17 minutes flat. Stephen is from Bear and a student at Duke University. He is spending his summer in Bethany working at Grotto Pizza.

On the women's side, the overall winner was 17-year-old Deja Santiago from Milford, finishing sixth overall in 20:11. Both winners received beautiful handmade awards by Linda Stanley and $50 gift cards to any of the Highway One establishments.

In the masters category, Rehoboth's Brandt Chi won in 19:00, finishing third overall, and Denise King from Arlington, Va., was the female masters winner, finishing 16th overall in 21:47.

Many participants came from far away, including 9-year-old Mason Lambert and his mother Megan who were visiting from the Virgin Islands. Both won their age groups, Mason in the 9 and under category in 23:57 and mom in the 30-34 age group in 24:38.  

The Miz Ten Sisters contest took place after the awards ceremony. Lee Ann Waltz was crowned Miz Ten Sisters and Jules Woodall Mr. Ten Sisters.  

Complete results can be found at races2run.com. The next Ten Sisters event is the 13th Outlet Liquors 5K at the Rusty Rudder Sunday, July 3. On Monday, July 4, Races2Run will be at the Rehoboth Beach Country Club for the inaugural Red, White and Blue 5K and Kiddie K to benefit Meals on Wheels Lewes-Rehoboth. Start time for both events is 8 a.m.
