Nearly 80 competitors got their surf on for the inaugural Diamond State Surf Classic at the north beach of the Indian River Inlet Oct. 16.

“The event went better than expected; great cooperation from participants and volunteers,” said Surfriders’ Chuck Labin, event organizer, in a follow-up email. “The waves, wind, and weather cooperated the whole day.”

Labin said the Surfriders were humbled to be connected with so many individuals, groups, and businesses that share the same vision – being able to enjoy the beach, surf, and bringing community together.

A total of 78 surfers competed – 18 in the 15-and-under junior division, 60 in the master division.

After a full day of friendly competition, Jordan O’Boyle and Alex Mitchell were named the masters team division winners. O’Boyle also won the Pete’s Steak Shop Wave of the Day.

Paul Camenisch won the Dogfish Head Tube of the Day. Tom Brecht won the Quiet Storm Air of the Day. Dave Brecht won the Surf Bagel Cutback of the Day.

The junior team division winners were Jack Lee and Sam Shoenfeld. Lee also won the Arena Signs and AdBoats Juniors Cutback of the Day. Shoenfeld also won the Dewey Beach Surf and Sport best floater.

Ben Carper won the Arena’s Deli juniors wave of the Day. Brody Smith won the Rent-Equips Tough Luck award.

Meadow Rasa was named the Surfrider Foundation’s Volunteer of the Day.

After opening Sept. 24, the event’s window of competition was scheduled to run through Sunday, Nov. 20. Event organizers first tried to hold the event Oct. 1, but had to postpone after a predicted southeasterly wind didn’t materialize and the waves were too choppy.
