The intersection at Old Orchard Road and Savannah Road (Rt. 9) is a very busy intersection that grows more difficult to negotiate each month. Turning left from Old Orchard onto Savannah to get to Route One south is almost impossible many times during the day and evening. The same goes for people leaving Walgreens, or the mini shopping center behind Walgreens and one next to it, trying to turn left onto Savannah Road or straight across to Old Orchard Road.
This busy intersection is an accident waiting to happen.
Now, we see more construction at this same location where there is no traffic light with the building of a car wash next to Walgreens. We just keep adding stores and mini malls everywhere without any thought to serious traffic and sprawl issues, not to mention the environmental ones. It is ironic that a traffic light was installed at the entrance to Five Points where the traffic is very light compared to Old Orchard and Savannah roads. Using this light to turn left onto Savannah requires travelling across the island at the entrance to Five Points that has no room for cars waiting to enter the traffic light lane. It's the poorest design for traffic movement I have ever seen.
Who approves this new construction without a thought to traffic and quality of life issues? The people who oversee the development of this region – county planners and officials, and the state department of transportation, are clueless on regional planning. This region will continue to expand until there is total gridlock everywhere and the quality of life has deteriorated to a point where this will no longer be a pleasant summer resort and wonderful place in which to live.
