December 30, 2017

The University of Delaware's popular educational program for individuals aged 50 and older will expand to Seaford for the upcoming spring semester. For the first time, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute classes will be offered at the Manor House, 1001 Middleford Road, Seaford, beginning Tuesday, Jan. 23.

With a record offering of over 150 classes already planned for Lewes, Ocean View and Dover this spring, the Osher program in Seaford will add to the educational opportunities for residents in western Sussex County and nearby Maryland.

Seaford courses include: Memoir Writing, Tuesdays, 9-10:30 a.m.; Presidential Seminar, Tuesdays, 10:45 a.m.- 12:15 p.m.; and Moral Thought in Popular Films, Tuesdays, 1:30-4 p.m.

OLLI is a membership-based cooperative organization where adults 50 and over can enjoy classes, teach, exchange ideas, and travel together. Instructors teach subjects they love to students who are there for the love of learning. The University of Delaware offers OLLI programs in Wilmington, Dover, Lewes and Ocean View.

"A thirst for learning or self-improvement does not diminish with age," said William Sharkey, chairman of UD's OLLI Lewes council.

As one OLLI member said, "Being an OLLI student has introduced me to a whole new world of inquiry and awakened new personal interests. The courses are not focused on exams, grades, time schedules or homework, and this lack of pressure makes learning a pure pleasure."

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute has a volunteer instructional staff with an impressive list of credentials reflecting a lifetime of experience in academia, government, the arts and the private sector. "The strength of our program is rooted in the quality of our teachers," said Anna Moshier, program manager.

OLLI's spring semester begins in Seaford Tuesday, Jan. 23, and ends Tuesday, March 27. The registration cost of $175 per semester includes unlimited enrollment in courses offered at the Seaford, Lewes and Ocean View locations.

Other membership benefits include social activities, travel opportunities and special program events. To register, visit the OLLI office in Lewes from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday to Thursday at 520 Dupont Ave. Priority registration deadline is Thursday, Jan. 11.
