Osher walk-in registration and instructor synopses set Jan. 3, 4 in Lewes

December 27, 2017

This winter need not be dreary for active seniors in Sussex County. In a single semester this spring, it is possible to learn memoir writing, study beekeeping or constitutional law, learn English country dancing or improve one’s understanding of U.S.-Russian relations. Other courses offered by the University of Delaware's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute this spring will allow students to sing in a chorus, study history, learn pottery or painting, study amazing aircraft, or explore the flora and fauna of southern Delaware. With an offering of more than 90 classes in Lewes and Ocean View, the spring program for adults over 50 will run Monday, Jan. 22 to Thursday, March 29. Classes will be offered in such subjects as literature, art, history, science, computers, music, life skills and languages. Classes are offered at the Fred Thomas Building, 520 Dupont Ave. in Lewes, and the Town Hall and Community Center, 32 West Ave. in Ocean View.

The deadline for priority registration for the spring is Thursday, Jan. 11. Registrations received after Jan. 11 will be processed on a space-available basis. In addition, there will be walk-in registration in Lewes from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 3 and Thursday, Jan. 4, at the Fred Thomas Building, 520 Dupont Ave., where instructors will give short synopses of their courses, and give students an opportunity to meet the instructors and ask questions.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes are membership organizations that provide opportunities for adults 50 and over to learn, teach, and travel with their peers. The only requirements for admission are interest in a continuing educational experience, support of the program through participation and a membership fee of $175 a semester. Tuition assistance scholarships are available. The University of Delaware also has OLLI programs in Dover and Wilmington, with programs starting in Seaford Tuesday, Jan. 23.
