Overbrook Town Center still a debacle

February 9, 2018

Regarding the upcoming reconsideration of the dreaded Overbrook Town Center project on Route 1 in Lewes, I am writing, with all due respect to Sussex County Council, to say that nothing has changed regarding the serious opposition to the proposed (over)development of the 114-acre property at Route 1 and Cave Neck Road on the Lewes/Milton border.

The area does not support, either philosophically or environmentally, such a large project. The same issues remain - namely, traffic tie-ups that are sure to occur, unnecessary spending on a horrendous overpass leading to a one-lane-in-each-direction rural road, the creation of a 5,000-space parking lot, an enormous shopping center created at a time when such enterprises are fast closing around the country, and finally, the damage such development would do to a quiet area of homes and farmland.

Neither I nor my neighbors are entirely opposed to progress and/or development. We are asking that the council consider a more reasonable form of development, such as Five Points, with its combination of homes and smaller stores, restaurants and services as just one example.

We are not a major metropolitan area. Traffic is already a nightmare, and this problem is no longer confined only to the summer months. I would argue that those council members and residents in the western part of the county might not realize the extent of our traffic and unbridled development issues at this moment in time. The worst is yet to come, if projects like this are allowed to move forward in the county.

The last vote of the council clearly showed its opposition to the Overbrook Town Center project, and we ask that they once again turn it down.
