Patriot Golf Day event presents opportunity to thank those who served our country

The annual Patriot Golf Day fundraiser is scheduled for Labor Day weekend, Sept. 2-5. This is a great opportunity for Cape Region golfers to show their appreciation for our nation’s men and women in uniform. 

At participating golf courses, golfers donate funds for college scholarships for U.S. military dependents whose spouse or parent was killed or disabled in action in Iraq and Afghanistan. 

PGA professional Dan Rooney created the foundation, served three tours of overseas military duty, and continues his significant involvement. Scholarship awards range up to $5,000 per academic year. Since 2007, the organization’s first year, thousands of these scholarships have been awarded using millions of dollars raised from the weekend event. 

Several Cape Region and Sussex County golf courses have set up donation sites for golfers. These include Kings Creek Country Club, Rehoboth Beach Country Club, Baywood Greens Golf Club in Long Neck, The Peninsula Golf & Country Club in Millsboro, The Rookery South in Milton and The Rookery North in Milford, Heritage Shores Golf Club in Bridgeville and Hoopers Landing Golf Course in Seaford.

Peninsula’s PGA Junior League 

The Peninsula Golf & Country Club joined other Cape Region clubs in sponsoring a PGA Junior League team of avid young golfers. This new PGA initiative combines elements of Little League with a fun scramble format for the matches, introducing young players to competitive golf. 

The Millsboro squad finished this first season with a 2-2 record, in third place. The team included Caleb Collins, Jude Damouni, Austin Dostal, Brooks Leonhartt, Frank Miller, Mac Miller, Asher Paloas, Lynden Prosser, Michael Tucker, Jackson Whitcomb and Nathaniel Wrobel. 

Rehoboth Beach CC 2016 Solheim Cup 

The Rehoboth Beach CC Ladies held their annual Solheim Cup competition Aug. 10. The tournament pits two groups of players against each other, using a format of six holes best ball, six holes scramble and six holes alternate shot for each two-player team. There were eight teams this year for each side.

The Herons beat the Ospreys by a single stroke, 547-548. The winning Herons side included Joan Crowley, Beth Carpenter, Genine Fidler, Tina Brinsfield, Sally Fogarty, Carole Medd, Jeannie Lindsay, Pauline Porter, Pat Beebe, Karen Storms, Julie Burton, Ann Cunningham, Kerry Lockwood, Stef Giacchini, Carol Perry and Roberta Amendola.

Kings Creek CC Ladies’ Member-Guest 

Kings Creek Country Club held its Ladies’ Member-Guest tournament June 24, with 108 golfers. Players dressed up and decorated their golf carts to match the day’s theme, Around the World in 18 Holes.

The tournament format used two better balls of four in both gross and net categories, in three flights, and also crowned overall champions.

Diane Herndon, Jean Otter, Stefanie Herndon and Sue McNamara won the overall gross team championship, with Francie Young, Cyndy Simeone, Anne Farley and Sue Bardsley winning the overall net team honors.

For the first flight, Judy Wetzel, Ruth Lauver, Ann Reed and Betty Minucci won first-place gross, with first-place net going to Melanie Pereira, Jane Kulfus, Deb Qualey and Cindy Peterka. Second-place net went to Marsha McLaurin, Barbara Thompson, Karen Gustafson and Sue Garson, with Sherry Pie, Barbara Brown-Kursh, Tricia Ritthaler and Daisey Hudson coming in third.

In the second flight, Katie Heintz, Arlyce Dubbin, Becky Caprano and Lisa Dillon won first-place gross, and Lynn Sweeney, Lisa Schofield, Jan Anderson and Sheppard Bear won first-place net. Second-place net went to Nancy Levenson, Margo Orland, Sandy Oropel and Linda Frese, with Atom Irwin, Hope Adams, Edie Fowlkes and Courtney Mills taking third.

First-place gross winners in the third flight were Joanne Yurik, Mary Gardiner, Kathy Casey and Peggy Castle, with first-place net earned by Prahbat Karapurkar, Rajani Purandare, Robbie Monkman and Erin Reid. 

Rita Musi, Bernie Reid, Laurie Bruner and Lesley Corydon won second-place net in the third flight, followed by Carol Simon, Debbie May, Marie Joholske and Eileen Clark in third. 

Fundraiser for Cape golf team

Cape Henlopen High School golf boosters are holding a fundraiser tournament for the Vikings squad Saturday, Oct. 8, at Midway Par 3, beginning with a shotgun start at 2:30 p.m. The $50 fee per player covers the 18-hole scramble, along with prizes and dinner.

Cape Senior Center tourney Sept. 26 

If you missed the Aug. 26 edition of the Cape Gazette, here’s a reminder that the Cape Henlopen Senior Center is holding its annual fundraiser golf tournament Monday, Sept. 26, at The Rookery South.  

The $100 per player fee includes greens fees, cart, breakfast, lunch, a goodie bag, and a chance to win nice prizes. Sponsorship opportunities remain available.

Rookery Sept. 8 NFL Scramble 

My Aug. 26 column discussed the annual NFL Scramble Sept. 8 at The Rookery South. However, recent aerification at the South Course caused a switch of location for the event to The Rookery North layout. For more information, call 302-684-3000. 

Local club competition results

The Sussex Pines Ladies 18 Hole group played a low gross/low net game Aug. 30. Brenda Lewes won low gross, with Susan Brady in second and JoAnn Foster in third. Dee Prilaman won low net, with Terry Daisey taking second and Carol MacFawn finishing third. 

The Kings Creek Ladies 18 Hole group played a Low Putts game Aug. 30. Only the putts used are added up for scoring, without handicaps.

Kathy Casey won first place in the first flight, with Jeannine Doane in second and Wendy Maclay in third. For the second flight, Pattie Mageee took first, with Debbie Grant in second and Atom Irwin in third. Sheree Davis was closest to the pin for the day.
