“We are ... Penn State!” The 14th annual College Day 5K July 23 in Dewey Beach was dominated by T-shirts from the 814 area code of Happy Valley. The 8 a.m. temperature for the start of the race was 86 degrees without a cloud in the sky; the early morning sun was heat lamp hot but at least it was humid.
Many flushed-faced runners across the time space continuum of ability levels pointed at their own heads as they approached the finish line, begging the question, “Am I crazy or what?”
Masters runner Mike Sewell, 47, all the way from Clayton, was the overall winner in 18:17, which is a 5:54 mile pace if you’re trying to relate from your couch.
Mike was joined on the top 5 leaderboard by Clark Seniff, 30, 18:41; Matt Pereira, 26, 19:18; Josh Adams, 15, 19:29; and Matt Teufel, 20, 20:09.
The first woman to cross the finish line was 20-year-old Ashley Leta from Peru, N.Y., in a time of 20:10. Following Ashley on the female leaderboard were Krista Nikolaus, 43, 20:31; Sarah Mandes, 38, 20:59; Susan Dunn, 39, 21:25; and Olivia Dyer, 16, 21:36.
The next Races2Run event at the beach is the 14th annual Dewey Beach Patrol 10K/5K Sunday, July 31, starting from Ivy restaurant on Dagsworthy Avenue at 8 a.m.
