The Franklin P. and Arthur W. Perdue Foundation, the charitable giving arm of Perdue Farms, awarded Special Olympics Delaware a $10,000 donation during a check presentation ceremony held Aug. 3 at the Delaware State Fairgrounds in Harrington.

The foundation has supported Special Olympics Delaware for the past five years as festival sponsor at the annual Special Olympics Truck Convoy. The funds provided lunch and entertainment for hundreds of truck drivers, supporters, and Special Olympics families following the convoy drive through scenic Sussex County in support of Special Olympics. This year, the foundation is doubling its support to $10,000 and aligning itself as an official sponsor of the event along with FedEx Ground and Walmart.

"Special Olympics Delaware, the athletes and their families hold a special place in our hearts at Perdue," said Kim Nechay, executive director of the Perdue Foundation. "We're proud to continue and expand our support for the truck convoy through the foundation. Each year, our drivers look forward to participating in this event and seeing the smiles of the athletes as they join them for a ride in their big rigs. It is an honor to be a part of a day that brings joy to so many and helps advance the cause of such a wonderful organization."

"It's a great company which cares about the community," said Special Olympics Executive Director Ann Grunert. "And so when a company of this stature and its employees step forward to support our athletes, it speaks volumes to those outside of our organization that our athletes deserve to be accepted, respected and celebrated."

Perdue drivers with their big rigs have participated in the Special Olympics Truck Convoy since its inception in 2003. The 2017 event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Delaware State Fairgrounds in Harrington.
