Philip Walter Coombe, humanitarian

Philip Walter Coombe, 86, of Lewes, formerly of Ridgewood, N.J., passed away quietly in his home Friday, Jan. 12, 2018. He was born July 30, 1931, to the late George and Laura Coombe of Kearny, N.J., and was the brother of the late George W. Coombe Jr.

Phil received his bachelor of arts degree from Westminster College in Pennsylvania and a master’s degree in philosophy from New York University. His dissertation of James P. Allaire, early steam engine builder, was the foundation toward his PhD in American history from NYU, awarded in 1999.

A 2nd lieutenant USMC retired, Phil was a Korean War combat veteran severely wounded in battle. Awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star, he attributed his faith in God and reading the Bible as major factors in his recovery. He went on to become a director of facilities at ITT headquartered in New York City, and subsequently was a professor at Wesley College in Dover.

Phil was active in his church and was involved in many humanitarian causes, notably Habitat for Humanity and the SPCA. He was a wine connoisseur, and was known for culinary expertise. A coin and stamp collector, he was also an animal lover, and received great comfort from his family of feline friends.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 23 years, Karen Foskett Coombe; five children, Pamela Coombe, Elizabeth Coombe Gehm, Deborah Coombe Young, Gregory Coombe and Andrew Coombe (children of the late Susan Allaire Coombe); his six grandchildren, great-grandchild, nine cousins, and an extended family of nieces and nephews.

Memorial Service to be held Tuesday, Jan. 23, at 11 a.m., at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 301 King Charles Avenue, Rehoboth Beach.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Westminster Presbyterian Church (Mission Fund), Guiding Eyes for the Blind; or The Salvation Army.
