Phyllis Greene Miranda, devout Catholic

March 18, 2017

Phyllis Greene Miranda, 77, was reunited with the Lord Thursday, March 16, 2017, at her home in Lewes, after a 20-month battle with lung cancer. She was born Aug. 31, 1939, in Danielson, Conn., the fourth of five children born to the late Shirley Greene and Loretta Despatie. The family lived in Danielson, Niantic, and New London, Conn., before settling more long-term in Northern Virginia. She graduated from Mount Vernon High School in Alexandria, Va., in 1957.

Phyllis worked for 30 years in the airline and travel industries as a reservations hostess and airline ticket agent for National Airlines, Eastern Airlines and Pan American Airlines. She was an avid traveler, visiting nearly 50 countries on six continents. Her Catholic faith was at the center of everything she did, inspiring her to make several pilgrimages to the Holy Land in Jerusalem, Fatima, Portugal and Medjugorje, Bosnia and Herzegovina. She also dedicated much of her retirement to volunteer work and Catholic charities. Post-retirement she lived for many years in Albuquerque, N.M., before ultimately settling in Lewes.

Phyllis deeply loved her family and was a social butterfly who was always popular in the communities where she lived. She is survived by: her husband of 43 years, Leonel V. Miranda; son Leonel G. Miranda and wife Raquel; son Francisco Miranda and wife Heidy; four grandchildren, Cesar Leonel, Marcela, Maria Cecilia, and Jackson; two sisters, Joyce Newman and Marjorie May; and her beloved canine companion Bijou. Also remembered are her eldest sister Carole Carroll and her eldest brother Hosea "Sonny" Greene, who preceded her in death.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 22, at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, 152 Tulip Drive, Lewes, where friends may visit beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will be private.

Due to the Lenten Season, the family is requesting in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Miranda's name to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963, or the Tunnell Cancer Center, c/o Beebe Medical Foundation, 424 Savannah Road, Lewes, DE 19958.
