Piracy Happened Here cruise set Sept. 19

August 24, 2016

National Talk Like A Pirate Day is Monday, Sept. 19. Captain Dave Green of the Cape Water Tours and Taxi will be presenting the Piracy Happened Here Cruise in partnership with the Lewes Historical Society departing at 5:15 p.m. The family friendly cruise will be led by costumed interpreter J. Marcos Salaverria, director of education of the Lewes Historical Society who will highlight pirate life along the Delaware Bay area.

The pirate queen and members of the Pirates of the Delaware Bay, an official chapter of the Red Hat Society, will be on board to contribute to the character of this fun-filled and informative adventure and to celebrate their chapter's third birthday. The Red Hatters are planning some surprises, a 50/50 and giveaways.

Attendees may dress in pirate or wench garb. They will learn of the explorers who first put Cape Henlopen on the map and come to understand the difficulties in navigating the cape's sometimes treacherously shallow waters. The tour will pass lighthouses that for generations have assisted in guiding ships, visitors and cargo through the area.

Attendees will learn about the important role of the Pilots Association for the Bay and River Delaware and the brave United States Life-Saving Service members who rescued victims from perilous shipwrecks during the 19th and 20th centuries. They will hear stories of the pirates and privateers who contributed to the legends of the Delaware Bay.

Cost is $22 for adults, seniors $21 (60 and up) and children 11 and under $15. To make a reservation, call 302-644-7334 or go to www.capewatertours.com.
