Attendees encouraged to wear pirate or wench costumes
July 29, 2016

Captain Dave Green of Cape Water Tours and Taxi runs the History Happened Here Tour Mondays in partnership with the Lewes Historical Society during the summer. This year, due to high popular demand, there will be two days dedicated to pirates. Two Piracy Happened Here cruises will highlight pirate life along the Delaware Bay area. These family-friendly cruises will be led by a costumed interpreter J. Marcos Salaverria, director of education, Lewes Historical Society, and are set for 5:15 p.m.  Monday, Aug. 8 and Monday, Sept. 19.

Participants will journey back in time to Lewes's maritime past through the centuries and learn of the explorers who first put Cape Henlopen on the map. They will hear about the pirates that sailed the same local waters the tour will travel upon and come to understand the difficulties in navigating the Cape's sometimes treacherously shallow waters.

Attendees will view lighthouses that have assisted in guiding ships, visitors and cargo through the area for generation. They will learn about the important role of the Pilots Association for the Bay and River Delaware and the brave United States Life-Saving Service men who rescued victims from perilous shipwrecks during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Members of the Red Hat Society Chapter, Pirates of the Delaware Bay, will be participating again in both cruises. Attendees are encouraged to wear their best pirate or wench costumes. Cost is $22 for adults, $21 for seniors and $15 for children ages 11 and younger. For more information and to reserve a space, call 302-644-7334 or go to www.capewatertaxi.com.
