Prayers on the sand unite community

Ministers gather to bless teachers and students

The enthusiasm and message more than made up for the small group of local Methodist clergy and parishioners who gathered to pray last month on Lewes Beach.

They met on the sand to show their unity and to pray for students and teachers as another school year was getting underway.

“We need to pray for healing and hope for our communities,” said the Rev. Earle Baker of Bethel U.M. Church in Lewes. “We need prayer for our schools and for our churches. We are facing a time of great change.”

“We can come together as one,” said the Rev. Marjorie Burns of Faith U.M. Church in Rehoboth Beach and Israel U.M. Church in Lewes. “I'm anticipating a big move by the Holy Spirit – a huge revival in the Lewes-Rehoboth area.”

Baker said it's hoped the prayer group will spread to all denominations and religious groups within the Cape Region. “We just happen to be Methodists here today. If God chooses us to be the catalyst, then so be it,” he said.

The Rev. Deborah McCaffity of St. George's AME Church also took part in the event.

Lee Parks of Bethel U.M. Church led the group in laying on hands to pray for students and teachers in attendance. “We need a peaceful year,” she said.
