It’s hard to believe, but this school year is almost half over.

For Pro Cutz Barbershop owner Chester Hope, that means it’s time to begin preparing for his shop’s annual back-to-school cuts for kids event.

For the past few years, Hope, his barbers on staff and visiting barbers have offered cuts for kids who otherwise wouldn’t be likely to get a back-to-school haircut. The event is always held on Labor Day, and more than 100 kids will occupy shop chairs throughout the day. Delaware State Police are on hand to give kids school supplies.

The feedback from the community has been wonderful, Hope said.

In preparation for next year, Hope said he is looking to expand, and he’s asking for help from the business community. He said he’s looking for more back-to-school goods or money to go toward backpacks, clothes, school supplies, sneakers and winter weather gear.

Kids can get hungry waiting for their cut, so Hope has been buying and grilling hot dogs and hamburgers. He said any assistance with costs associated with feeding the kids would be greatly appreciated.

Haircuts are discounted to $5 for the event, and a child receives an additional $1 off for every “A” in a core course from last year’s fourth-quarter marking period. This is done to encourage kids to do their school work, said Hope.

Individuals or businesses interested in making a donation or helping with the event may call Hope at 302-313-4100 or stop by the shop, 12001 Old Vine Blvd., Lewes.
