Morning and afternoon sessions at Lewes Historical Society

Programs offered during teacher training days

January 19, 2017

The Lewes Historical Society is offering programs geared for kids in kindergarten through second grade, while school is out during Teacher Development Days including Jan. 27, Feb. 17 and March 3. Visit the Cannonball House Maritime Museum at 118 Front St. in Lewes for children's story time, engaging learning opportunities, and history-themed crafts, all scheduled at two sessions per day: a morning session from 10 to 11:30 a.m., and an afternoon session from 1 to 2:30 p.m. These programs are free for all children under age 12 and only $5 per adult.

Space is limited; call for reservations, 302-645-7670.

On Friday, Jan. 27, enjoy Pirates & Paintings. Join the scurvy crew with an appearance from Captain Kidd himself, a living history character! Listen to a comedic reading of the children's story, "No Pirates Allowed, Said Library Lou." Become a pirate by participating in a hands-on craft activity, creating and decorating yer' own sailor's cap to take home to continue high-seas adventures.

The Friday, Feb. 17 program is titled, A Sailor's Heart for Me. Create a Sailor's Valentine. Meet living history character Gilbert McCraken, a Delaware Bay and River Pilot. Hear his tales of Lewes's maritime past.

Friday, March 3 is Fun with Feathers. Meet living history character Susan Roland King, a former resident of the Cannonball House. Gain knowledge about local waterfowl, and make a feathered hat.

The Cannonball House Maritime Museum is significant to Lewes' history, bearing a scar of a cannonball from the War of 1812 when the British bombarded the town in retaliation for citizens not providing supplies to troops offshore. Now open as a museum, the galleries display a history of the Pilots' Association, shipwrecks along the coast, the rise and fall of the Cape Henlopen lighthouse, and the city's menhaden fishing past.
