Project superintendent hired for clubhouse build at The Peninsula

The Whayland Co., with headquarters in Laurel and clients throughout Sussex County and the Eastern Shore of Maryland, announces the addition of longtime project superintendent Howard Twiford to its southern Delaware management team.

Twiford will be the on-site person in charge of the new 37,000-square-foot clubhouse being constructed at The Peninsula on the Indian River Bay community in Long Neck. He began his new position June 6, and will be overseeing the project until its expected completion later this year.

“I’ve done a lot in the way of high-end millwork over the years and have run projects of all different scopes, so I’m very excited to be overseeing this project for my longtime friends at the Whayland Co.,” says Twiford, who has a more than 20-year relationship with the Delmarva commercial construction company. “I worked for the state of Maryland at one time, but that’s run its course now, and I’m excited to embark on a new challenge here in southern Delaware.”

Twiford will be the point person for Whayland on-site in Long Neck, drawing on his years of experience working in both Delaware and Maryland. Among other projects in the past, he spent many years working for the University of Maryland system at Horn Point and Salisbury University, as well as at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess Anne.

During his time at SU, Twiford worked on what is now Devilbiss Hall, which houses the departments of nursing and health sciences on the university’s ever-growing campus.

“I have to say I enjoyed working on that one the most, because it was where I had the biggest impact on the finished project,” says the 51-year-old father of two. “But I think this job at The Peninsula could be even more satisfying. I really like that I can be at the site each day and have an impact on the creative flow of the job.”

Twiford prides himself on being a detail-oriented person who can make adjustments on the fly as necessary. Rarely does a job go exactly as planned, a fact both Twiford and Whayland Co. President Steve Hentschel know full well.

While the blueprints and drawings are complete and the property owners have stated their wishes and intentions, weather, unexpected alterations and other issues are sure to arise, as with any high-end construction project. “Over the course of the build, everyone has to learn to work together as a team. Structural and other changes happen all the time, and we need to be ready to deal with that,” says Twiford. “At the end of the day, everyone wants to do a good job and be proud of what they’ve accomplished.”

Hentschel says, “With a project of this magnitude and scope, I really felt we needed an experienced manager on site full time to manage the build and the personnel. Once I knew Howard was available and he could draw on his past experiences with Whayland, I knew he was the right man for the job.”

Work has already begun on the new clubhouse at The Peninsula, with a grand opening expected before the end of the year.  Once completed, it will provide beautiful views of the water and the golf course.
