Promise of Cuba from Sussex perspective

September 26, 2016

The promise of Cuba lies in its people who are innovative, strong and proud...

From the revolution to the special period, they continue to endure challenges with a smile, and when a question arises that has no immediate answer, it remains "Est complicado."

It is a privilege to have spent time with some "feet on the ground" citizens who are candid, yet careful in their responses.

Can you imagine wanting to travel, saving your hard-earned money to take the trip, and then having your government deny your request to leave the country?

Can you see yourself hand washing laundry every day, including towels and sheets, and hanging them outside to dry?

Do you know what it would be like to walk everywhere, ride a donkey, horse or bike, take a bus or taxi (for special occasions) to get from place to place? (Few have enough cash to own a car, and there is no credit card to charge it).

Can you imagine having a ration card to purchase food or go to a market where quantities and variety are limited?

What about your wages being roughly $25 per month and for the most part earning the same salary whether you have a degree or not, due to governmental control? These are good questions and one last one:

If you answer yes to any of these questions, will you do all of this with a grateful and cheerful heart? The Cubans' spirit of positivity and passion remain the promise of their future.
