Race Into the New Year honors the memory of Doug White

January 7, 2017

The Race Into the New Year 5K, held on the Rehoboth Boardwalk Dec. 31, paused before the high noon start to remember the legacy of Doug White, who passed away suddenly, weeks earlier, from a brain hemorrhage at the age of 74.

“Many runners are wearing blue and gold today, the colors of the Boston Marathon, to honor Doug, who was scheduled to run his 44th consecutive Boston this spring,” said Seashore Striders Race Director Tim Bamforth. “There are markers along the way representing the Boston towns on the marathon course.”

A total of 267 runners completed the fast-paced race, which was won by Jeff Young in a season’s best time of 16:27. He was followed closely by Austen Cave of Delmar in 16:29.

Runners breaking the magic 20-minute barrier were Matt Dunn in 18:40, Jim Smiley in 18:58, Rick Hughes in 19:17, Paul Montini in 19:31, Chris Stanley in 19:40, Peter Erwig in 19:44, Cindy Conant in 19:48, Stefan Fuchslauger in 19:53 and Colin Craig in 19:58.

The next Seashore Striders race is the Valentine’s 5K at 10 a.m., Sunday, Feb. 12, at Cape Henlopen State Park.
