RAL to offer beginners’ pastel classes starting Nov. 9

November 1, 2017

For those who are completely new to pastel painting, Beginning Pastels classes will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon, Thursdays, Nov. 9 to Dec. 7, at the Rehoboth Art League. They will initiate students into the wonderful work of pastels, covering the planning, preparing and executing of pastel painting. Local artist Edilu Nehrbas will help students explore technique, texture and materials to create a simple but dynamic composition. The cost of this series of four classes is $150 for members and $185 for nonmembers.

Pastel painting emerged in the 18th century with artists such as Jean-Baptiste Perronneau, Rosalba Carriera, and Maurice Quentin de la Tour. While oil paintings over the centuries have become discolored and cracked with age, pastel paintings retain their original freshness. With pastels, artists can achieve a wonderful velvety texture. The rich colors are easy to blend, and they can have a splendid luminosity. The finished pieces can look just as luminescent as paintings, yet the process to create them resembles drawing more than painting.

To register, go to rehobothartleague.org or call 302-227-8408, Ext. 112. All classes will be held at the Rehoboth Art League, 12 Dodds Lane in Henlopen Acres.

The Rehoboth Art League is a nonprofit organization dedicated to making art accessible to all. This program is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. The division promotes Delaware arts events on DelawareScene.com.
