Rare book sale in Lewes June 23

June 18, 2018

The Friends of Lewes Public Library will hold a sale of rare and collectible books from 3 to 5 p.m., Saturday, June 23, at the Lewes library. More than 500 old, unusual or rare books (some dating back to the mid-1800s), will be available, with prices starting at $2. Credit cards will be accepted for purchases of $10 or more. A preview sale for Friends members only will be held from 2 to 3 p.m., before the event opens to the public. Friends memberships can be purchased at the door.

Because the library has accumulated so many antiquarian books, they are being priced aggressively, at 30 to 65 percent below Amazon and Bookfinder.com prices. Books being offered include children’s, science, home and garden, local interest, biography, history, religion and fiction titles, and some unusual items such as collectible first editions. Items will be sorted by category and protected by acid-free clear bags. About 95 percent of the books are hardback.

“Our volunteers are still making amazing discoveries as they go through the donations,” said Candace Vessella, Friends board president. “Collectors will find some real treasures, and at prices well below market value.”

She said people in the Lewes area really appreciate books and tend to hold onto their favorites, but as residents downsize or books get left to estates, people look for a place to donate them where they’ll make a difference. They naturally think of the library, where a book they no longer want can help raise money to support library services. “We’re delighted to pass these wonderful books on to people who will appreciate them and, in the process, raise much-needed funds for our library,” said Vessella.

Proceed will benefit the Friends of the Lewes Public Library, a nonprofit 501c3 affiliate of contributing members who support the Lewes Public Library. Proceeds will be used for book and media purchases, special projects and other library needs. For more information, go to www.lewes.lib.de.us.
