Red, White and Blue 5K at RBCC a patriotic celebration

July 7, 2017

The second annual Red, White and Blue 5K at the Rehoboth Beach Country Club July 4, to benefit Meals on Wheels, attracted a record crowd of 318 runners, most sporting patriotic outfits.

Jonathan Hartnett’s beautiful voice sang “The Star Spangled Banner,” with the sound wafting across Rehoboth Bay. The vista and atmosphere provided an overpowering combination. Sen. Ernie Lopez delivered an Independence Day message before blowing the air horn to start the race.

Jeff Young, 26, from Philly, won the race in 17:11. Jeff’s dad, Tim, ran 23:19, while his mom, Sheila, clocked 27:57. There are lots of family combinations in a field of 300 on a holiday; in fact, most everybody is related to somebody.

Joining Jeff among the male top five leaderboard were Bob Yonick, 33, in 17:31; Aldan Skinner, 15, in 17:38; Joey Andrisani, 34, in 18:07; and Francisco Puac, 31, in 18:14.

The top five among women were Jenny Swiderski-Yonick, 31, in 20:21; Brooke Magni, 35, in 21:21; Liliana Ladner, 18, in 21:41; Susie McLaughlin, 17, in 21:53; and Helen MacDermott, 38, in 22:25.

The next Races2Run events are the Kelly J. Fritchman Memorial 5K Saturday, July 8, at Irish Eyes Lewes and the Dewey Beach Liquors 5K Sunday, July 9.
