Registration open for Family Boat Building Weekend set June 16-18

February 25, 2017

The Lewes Historical Society will rekindle the Lewes tradition of boat building as part of the 2017 Family Boat Building Weekend. The event is held over the course of Father’s Day weekend, Friday-Sunday, June 16-18, and family groups will have the chance to build their own 12-foot Bevin's Skiff and test their craftsmanship as they launch the boats in the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal Sunday afternoon. Participating groups and families will build their boats next to the canal in front of the Lewes Life-Saving Station in historic Lewes on the canalfront, at the intersection of Pilottown Road and Shipcarpenter Street.

The dedicated team of volunteers will help show the ropes for beginners and master craftsmen alike. At the end of the weekend, boatbuilding teams will be able to row away with their skiffs and take them home.

Participating groups must have three to five members present at all times throughout the weekend. A minimum of three adults per group is required. This activity is designed for all members of the family, but recommended for children at least 10 years old. All groups will be provided with the wood, hardware and oars needed. A limit of six boat kits are available, and registration is required.

The fee is $975 and includes handmade build kit materials, lunch Saturday and Sunday, and six commemoration program T-shirts for team members. Additional shirts can be purchased. For more information and to register, go to www.historiclewes.org/education/family-boat-building or call 302-645-7670.
