Rehoboth Art League holds opening reception

April 20, 2017

The Rehoboth Art League held an opening reception for four local artists April 7 in the Corkran, Tubbs and Venture galleries.

In the Corkran Gallery, Jean Doran showed her collection titled “Eclectic Views From My Life.” In her artist’s statement, Doran says “My work in this show pretty much illustrates the way I am inspired by so many varied ideas. Every painting is some new branch of My Eclectic Life tree-always looking for something fresh and interesting [yet in my case] mostly recognizable rather than abstract.”

In the Tubbs Gallery, three artists, Tara Funk Grimm, Jan Crooker and Nina Mickelsen showed works titled “Beaches: Boards and Treats.”

In their collective artists’ statement, the artists say ”While we are strong colorists, we differ in the way we look through our artistic viewfinder - Tara boldy and abstractly reorganizing the elements with multiple layers of complex color; Nina offering intense daring abstracted close-ups with simplified color, and Jan finding a middle-ground in strong linear and circular shapes, striking brushwork and complex color mixes.”

In the Ventures gallery, Susan Waters-Eller showed her recent work titled “Skies and Waves.” Waters-Eller has been professor at Maryland Institute College of Art since 1978. She has participated in numerous solo and group shows on the east coast, France and China. In her artist’s statement she says, “The vast sky and the always changing waves have been an enormous influence in my work. The intent of this exhibition is to demonstrate this influence.”

On display also were some of the bowls made by the RAL pottery studio that will be offered at 2nd Annual Empty Bowls event Sunday April 30. The event will raise funds for the Harry K Foundation and Miriam’s Table.
