Rehoboth receives no bids on City Hall landscaping

City to open new bids Thursday, Aug. 17
July 27, 2017

Rehoboth Beach received no bids for landscaping at the new City Hall, forcing the city to go back to the drawing board and readvertise the project.

“A project of this size and scope requires advanced landscape expertise. We are confident with more time we will receive competitive bids,” said city spokeswoman Krys Johnson.

The landscaping plan called for 55 trees, 825 shrubs, 1,950 perennials and 2,000 square feet of sod plus irrigation. Much of the landscaping would be along a planned promenade walkway that is intended to connect the new City Hall and its public parking lot to Second Street.

The project was readvertised the bids will be opened Aug. 17. Mayor Sam Cooper said he was not discouraged by the lack of bidders for the $205,000 project. He said three firms expressed interest but one emailed an incomplete bid, one was late submitting and another said they ran out of time before submitting.

“It’s not about lack of interest and more about the process,” Cooper said.

He said the plans for the project have been out for a month. While most of the work will be along the promenade, Cooper said there will be some plantings in the area between City Hall and the Rehoboth fire hall, and some grass planting in front of City Hall on Rehoboth Avenue, although he has not seen the final plans yet.
