Rehoboth summer regulations begin to take effect

Parkmobile app to begin its fifth season
May 15, 2017

Tourists are already flocking to Rehoboth Beach and the town’s summer regulations are beginning to take effect.

Parking meters will go back into operation Friday, May 26. In addition to quarters and credit cards - which can be used at meters on Rehoboth Avenue and on North First Street - this year will mark the fifth year since Rehoboth instituted the Parkmobile pay-by-phone parking app.

Parkmobile has steadily grown in popularity, bringing in $1.2 million in parking revenue to the city last year.

Since its introduction in Rehoboth, Parkmobile, which allows users to extend their parking sessions without having to leave the beach, has been introduced in Bethany Beach, Dewey Beach, Lewes and Ocean City. Parkmobile CEO Jon Zigler said Parkmobile is now available in 200 cities. Zigler said 28 percent of Parkmobile users use it outside their home market.

Some regulations went into effect May 1, including no left hand turns at the Rehoboth Avenue traffic signals and no dogs on the beach or Boardwalk. Those regulations remain in effect until Saturday, Sept. 30.

Beginning Monday, May 15, bikes will be allowed on the Boardwalk only between 5 to 10 a.m. Rollerblades and roller skates are prohibited from the Boardwalk starting May 15 and skateboards are banned from the Boardwalk and Bandstand year-round.

Starting Monday, May 15, canopies and cooking materials such as grills, open flames and fire pits will be banned from the beach. Only umbrellas no more than 8 feet in diameter and 7-feet-6 inches high and baby tents for infants will be allowed.
