Rehoboth Wawa celebrates grand opening

June 11, 2016

The Cape Region’s third Wawa store officially opened for business June 10.

Located in the Rehoboth Gateway shopping center off Route 1, the new Wawa kicked off its first day with dancing, a ribbon-cutting and a sub-building contest.

The Rehoboth Wawa is the first new Wawa in Delaware in 2016 and joins Bed Bath and Beyond and The Fresh Market as tenants at Rehoboth Gateway. The highlights of the event included area managers, store personnel and local officials joining together to cut the ribbon and the hoagie-building contest between the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company and Delaware State Police Troop 7.

The hoagie-building was won by the firefighters, who took home $1,000 for charity and a trophy for their effort in building 58 hoagies. Troop 7 made 47 hoagies and also was awarded $1,000 for charity, although no winner was declared in the food fight that went on during the 3-minute contest.

The event included remarks from General Manager Darin Burgoyne and an appearance from company mascot Wally.
