Right to work legislation simply union busting

November 28, 2017

In response to Rob Arlett's commentary (Nov. 14), don't be fooled. Federal law already states that you can't be forced to join a union so a policy that is named right to work is just an illusion.

It is not some magical way to make sure someone has a job. The real purpose of right-to-work legislation is to make an unfair playing field by tilting it toward the employer. It would make it harder to form unions, and thus make it harder to collectively bargain for better wages, benefits and working conditions. Workers could join a union if they wanted to, but would not have to pay dues.

That hardly makes sense. The union couldn't survive, which is the purpose of right to work. There is a higher poverty rate in right-to-work states because wages are kept low, and in Sussex County we know about low wages. Right to work is union busting, pure and simple.
