Road work planned along Route 24

DelDOT has five projects over next five years
December 19, 2016

The Delaware Department of Transportation has major projects planned for the Route 24 corridor over the next five years.

Several projects are planned at or near the Route 5 and Route 23 intersection in Long Neck. Islands will be installed to improvement traffic flow at key intersections; sidewalks and bike lanes will be added and Plaza Drive will be realigned to match the traffic signal. In addition, curbs and shoulders will be added; turn lanes will be extended; and the traffic signals at Plaza Drive and the Route 5/Route 23 intersection will be reconstructed. Construction: Fiscal years 2020, 2021.

Other projects include:

• Plantation Road intersection to Route 1: This section of Route 24 will be widened 1,000 feet through the Plantation Road intersection to mirror the existing 5-lane section near the Route 1 intersection. The project also includes improvements 1,000 feet along Warrington and Plantation roads. Construction: Fiscal years 2018 and 2019.

• Love Creek bridge to Mulberry Knoll Road intersection: Mulberry Knoll Road intersection will have through and turn lanes; the bridge entrance will be widened; and the entire section of road will be repaved. Construction: Fiscal years 2020 and 2021.

• Camp Arrowhead Road and Angola Road intersections west of Love Creek: Work at both intersections includes new turn lanes and repaving of Route 24 between the two intersections. Construction: Fiscal year 2021.

• Mount Joy Road/Oak Orchard Road and Bay Farm Road/Autumn Road intersections in Long Neck: Widening northbound and southbound approaches to allow for through and turn lanes. Construction: Fiscal years 2019 and 2020.

John Gaines, DelDOT project manager, said all construction dates are subject to change depending on funding. In addition, a proposed subdivision along Mulberry Knoll Road could impact the work timeline at the Route 24/Mulberry Knoll intersection, said Todd Sammons, DelDOT's southern division engineer.

If Sussex County Council approves the Belle Terre development application, the developer will be required to provide funding for improvements at the intersection, which could include installation of a traffic signal. But the addition of a signal is not written in stone. “There are other options to achieve an acceptable level of service,” Sammons said. “It's a matter how far we go based on traffic and timing of development proposals,” Sammons said.

Two projects near the intersection have been approved. The new Cape Henlopen School District Love Creek Elementary School is scheduled to open by the start of the 2017-2018 school year and the state is planning construction of a new Delaware State Police Troop 7.
