Robert D. Snowden, retired bank manager

Robert D. Snowden, 92, of Georgetown, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at Harrison Senior Living.

Bob was born in South Bend, Ind., to the late Dane and Lora Snowden.

During World War II he joined the U.S. Marine Corps Parachute Battalion and served in the Pacific for 27 months in the campaigns of Bougainville, Villa la Villa and Okinawa. Wounded in Bougainville, he received the Purple Heart. After World War II, he joined the U.S. Navy, and was stationed at Ft. Miles, New London, Conn., Key West, Fla., and aboard the USS Sarsfield.

He played basketball with various Sussex County teams in the 1950s. In 1961, he was elected to the Delaware House of Representatives and appointed by Gov. Pete duPont to the Council on Housing in the 1980s.

He had been manager of Wilmington Trust Company branches in Seaford and Milford, and at the time of his retirement, held the same position at the Georgetown office. In 1985 and 1986 he served as deputy sheriff of Sussex County.

Bob was past president of Kiwanis, member of Franklin Lodge AF & AM, charter member of Sussex Pines County Club and member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Edna Rust Snowden; three daughters, Margaret Brackett (Ron) of Martinez, Ga., Wanda Burton (George) and Mary Conaway (Bruce), all of Georgetown; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank Harrison Senior Living in Georgetown for their wonderful, loving care of Bob.

A visitation will be held Friday, May 26, from noon to 2 p.m., in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown. A graveside service will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Georgetown Ambulance Service, 406 Front St., Georgetown, DE 19947, or the organization of your choice.
