Ronald Lee Hitchens, chicken catcher

May 14, 2018

Ronald Lee “Tabu” Hitchens, 62, of Millsboro was born Oct. 5, 1955, to the late Charles and Doretta Adkins in Milford. Ronnie departed this life Monday May 7, 2018, at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes. Ronnie started his education journey at Millsboro Elementary School, and he graduated from Indian River High School in 1975. After graduation he joined the U.S. Army for a short time.

Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Ronnie started working for Showell Farms as a chicken catcher. He continued to catch chickens most of his adult life and he enjoyed doing it. To hear him tell it, he was one of the best chicken catchers around. Ronnie also started a side hobby as a DJ. His DJ name was Mix Master "T." Ronnie also did odd jobs like cleaning cars and trucks and yard work until his health limited him from those jobs. For anyone who ever met Ronnie you knew he was also a talker; he loved talking about his experiences in life. You probably couldn't get a word in edgewise when he was around; whatever the subject was he could tell you something about it.

Ronnie was a member of St. John 2nd Baptist church under the leadership of Rev. Annie J. Custis. He loved worshipping and serving the Lord.

His survivors included: five children, Cherle Harris, Candice Mumford, Anthony Mumford, all of Frankford, Sunday Sanchez of Georgetown, and Lemston Reed of Millsboro; five brothers: Charles Hitchens (Juanita), Jerome Hitchens (Pamela), and Nathaniel Hitchens, all of Millsboro, Angelo Hitchens of Bishopville, Md., and Donald Hitchens of Ellendale; two aunts: Mary Ann Adkins of Millsboro and Tambara A. Stewart of Georgetown; a longtime special friend, Barbara Jean Mumford of Frankford; five grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
