Teams prep for DIAA Tourney
October 26, 2017

The Delmarva Christian volleyball team made its final home tuneup for the DIAA State Tournament, defeating Sussex Academy 25-18, 25-10, 23-25 and 25-12 Oct. 25 on Senior Night.

Senior setter Olivia Berger led the Royals with 19 assists and added four digs in the match. The two Camryns, Breasure and Thompson, had six and five kills, respectively. Gabrielle Book put down five kills, while serving four aces. Mia Berger and Ashlyn Stonebraker each served five aces.

“Coach Berger started the six seniors tonight, and it was really fun,” said senior outside hitter Book. “We were really excited about that, and I think it set the tone for the rest of the match.”

The Royals had a third-game letdown, when they allowed the Seahawks back in the match before their serve took over the fourth set.

“We lost a little focus in the third game,” said head coach Jim Berger. “We just didn’t play with intensity. We were playing not to lose, and not playing to win. We weren’t focused. With a good team like SAS, you can’t do that.

The six seniors, Olivia Berger, Breasure, Thompson, Book, Taylor Tucker and Charlize White started the match for the Royals.

“The seniors were having fun and they were playing well,” said Berger. “So I was glad they had that time together on the court.”

Sussex Academy head coach and Cape grad Hailee Gooch was pleased with her team’s performance.

“I’m proud that my girls were able to keep their spirits high,” said Gooch. “They have progressed so much this season, and watching them have fun while staying competitive against another great team is the ultimate win.”

Seahawks senior setter Bailey Hesson led the team with eight kills, three aces and seven digs. Searra Pollitt had 10 assists and six digs. Madison Burke and Courtney Sneller each had nine digs. Julia Swingle bumped six digs.

Sussex Academy will host Early College High School of Dover Friday, Oct. 27, for its Senior Night.

Delmarva Christian was set to finish the regular season at Delmar Thursday, Oct. 26.
