Race at Crooked Hammock benefits Children’s Beach House

Runners turn out for inaugural Ashley Furio 5K

The Ashley Furio Memorial 5K for the Children’s Beach House at the Crooked Hammock Oct. 15 filled up all area parking lots, including Fulton Bank, which opened at race time with no parking spaces.

Everything got worked out, with a kiddie race at 8:50 followed by a 5K run/walk meandering and marauding to Lewes and back, all under exquisite fall weather conditions.

Patrick Boettcher was the overall winner in 17:11. Rounding out the top five on the male leaderboard were Martin Rodriguez in 18:13, Joseph Capen in 19:16, Chris Sherman in 20:36 and Brian Johnson in 20:51.

Susan Dunn was the first woman to finish in 20:59. She was followed by Meryl Ludwig in 21:36, Dominique Homza in 22:52, Karen Dawson in 23:20 and Sharon Masello in 23:25.  

“This is going to be a popular race,” said Race Director Wayne Kursh. “The spread afterward was just amazing.”

Young girls ran fast, including 11 years olds Lily Manlove in 25:31, Grace Hudson in 25:37 and Riley Klopp in 27:36.

Caroline Maull, 14, won the 14-19 age group in 25:02. Dominique Homza, 24, ran 22:52 to capture the 20-29 age group.

Young guns on the male side that posted fast times included Lex Johnson, 12, in 25:29.
