RV owners stream into Lewes

Watchung Airstream Club ride into Lewes in style on the ferry
May 15, 2018

The Watchung N.J. Airstream Club, a chartered unit of the Wally Byam Airstream Club Intl., chose to ride in style by taking the Cape May-Lewes Ferry on its way to attending a club rally in Ocean City, Md., the first weekend of May.

Eight club members hooked up their Airstreams and journeyed by ferry from Cape May to Lewes, where the shiny, vintage RV's made their way down the ramp enroute to the rally.

"We are a group of Airstream owners who love to travel and spend time with our family and friends, all while having fun," the club's website explains.

The Wally Byam Airstream Club is one of the largest single-brand RV organizations in the world, with over 6,000 members and 120 local units across the United States, Canada and Europe. When Airstreams first took to the road in 1931, a passion for the design and use led to the formation of the Wally Byam Airstream Club in 1955. The club was named after Airstream inventor and engineer Wally Byam; fewer of them are around today, but Airstreams are still made in Jackson Center, Ohio.

President of the Watchung, N.J. Airstream Club David Cahall and Vice President Steven Tancer led the charge off the ferry on their way to Maryland where they expected to meet 16 additional "Airstreamers" for a camping rally at the Castaways RV Resort. At the rally, fellow enthusiasts and club members have the chance to show off their shiny, riveted, almost space-like Airstreams, bringing together a community that takes pride restoring and maintaining their classic RVs.
