Sarah Elizabeth Sturgis, Townsends retiree

January 10, 2018

Sarah Elizabeth Sturgis of Laurel departed this life Friday, Dec. 22, 2017, at Peninsula General Hospital, Salisbury, Md. She was born Jan. 28, 1958, to the late Anna Lee Tunner and Arthur Sturgis in Millville.

Sarah worked for Townsends for 16 years before she retired. She loved visiting her two sisters, Dollie Sturgis and Nancy Bratten. In her spare time, she loved puzzle books, playing cards, spending time at the beach with her grandbabies or going to the park. Sarah loved fried chicken, and baked macaroni and cheese with an ice-cold Pepsi.

Mother was one of the nicest people you could ever meet. She was my rock, everything a girl could want as a mother. She was fun-loving and caring, and she would watch the kids so we could go party. She had a wonderful life full of great memories.

Sarah overcame her fear of water by putting just her feet in at first, but before you knew it the girls got her to get in completely. What started out as "I'll just sit here" became "I'm getting in." She liked talking to Nina Wescott and Madeline Hall on the phone or when they met at the soup kitchen in Laurel.

Sarah leaves to cherish precious memories: her devoted friend, Eric Middleton; four children, Arthur Blount of Elkton, Md., Sarah Sturgis and Alfred Wescott Sr., both of Frankford, and Christopher Sturgis of Laurel; two sisters, Dollie Sturgis of Millsboro and Nancy Bratten of Selbyville; one brother, Jerry Mumford of Bivalve, Md.; one daughter-in-law, Jennifer Middleton; eight grandchildren, Jordan Blount, Nakesha Blount, Nicole Robinson, Christiana Sturgis, Alkenia Wescott, Alfred Wescott Jr., Ayanna Sturgis and Auryah Wescott; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur Sturgis and Anna Lee Tunner; three sisters, Elsie, Geraldine and Tobiathia; and two brothers, Arthur and Alfred Sturgis.

Celebration of Life Service will be Saturday, Jan. 13, at noon, at Bennie Smith Funeral Home, 427 North Front St., Seaford.
