A Seaford man has been charged with leaving the scene of a collision and other charges after a 9-year-old girl died following an April 12 crash.

Dwayne R. McConnell, 21, was driving a 2002 Mazda Protege northbound on German Road near Old Furnace Road at about 5 p.m. when he struck a 9-year-old girl who was walking back to her German Road home after checking the mailbox, said Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe of the Delaware State Police.

McConnell fled the scene driving northbound, Jaffe said.

The girl sustained major injuries, and she was flown to A.I. Dupont Children’s Hospital in critical condition. On April 14, the girl died from her injuries.

Police located McConnell and charged him on April 16 with operation of a vehicle causing death of another person, inattentive driving, leaving scene of a collision resulting in death, failure to report a collision resulting in injury or death and possession of marijuana. He was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court 2 and released on $6,151 unsecured bond.
