Seashore Half Marathon has more categories than an itemized tax return

Delmar Wildcats Cave and Dunn capture overall titles
April 15, 2017

The eighth annual Seashore Classic Half Marathon and 5K at Irish Eyes in Lewes, starting and finishing on Market Street, had more subcategories than an itemized tax return.

There were seven in the half marathon alone before getting into five-year age groups. A total of 120 ran the half from post to paddock, either as individuals or part of a relay team. Another 82 ran the 5K.

By the time the dust had settled on the boiled dogs on the porch at Irish Eyes, and a small dog was Velcroed free from his frontal pooch papoose, three hours had passed.

Delmar Wildcats dominated the winners’ circle for the open half, as Austen Cave, 15, was overall champion in 1:21:47, while Susan Dunn, 39, captured the female title in 1:36:19.

The top five in the half after Cave were Martin Rodriguez in 1:25:07, Kameron Hartfield in 1:27:40, Mike Sewell in 1:29:43 and Paul Montini in 1:30:23.

Colin Craig, 15, from Rehoboth Beach won the 5K in 20:38 followed by Rick Poppleton, Robert Fitzgerald and Bennett Brumbly.

Nicole Bartone, 27, was the first female in 23:26 followed by Elizabeth Melson, 15, in 25:20.
