SeeShore Fest at Starboard to benefit Foundation Fighting Blindness Aug. 26

August 16, 2017

For Heather Napolitano, president of the Foundation Fighting Blindness Philadelphia chapter, raising awareness for vision impairment is personal. She fights to help fund essential research and grants that further practices like gene therapy for children and vision restoration for adults like herself. Napolitano began losing her vision four years ago, but one might say that while her own sight was being compromised, her vision for helping others through the foundation came into clear focus.

"I have met some of the most incredible people throughout this journey of vision loss," Napolitano said. "They inspired me to stay positive and use my voice. The SeeShore Fest is our unique way of having fun while raising awareness for the 10 million-plus Americans who are affected by vision-robbing diseases."

Napolitano and the foundation will partner with The Starboard Restaurant for its third annual SeeShore Fest from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 26. The fundraiser raises both awareness and funds for research. Over the years, the foundation has raised more than $700 million, making it a cornerstone in the vision impairment community. Last year's event brought in $9,200 for the foundation, and this year, organizers are looking to top that number and exceed $12,000.

SeeShore Fest is fun for the whole family and includes lots of games where participants can win prizes and even cold, hard cash. Games will include the Punch Out game with 120 punches ranging from $25 to $300 in value, Cash Cube (with the chance to win cash or funny money toward other prizes) and a Leaping Lizard game for kids. There will also be raffles ranging from $325 to $4,000, and over 100 businesses have donated items and services for the event.

Steve "Monty" Montgomery, owner of the Starboard, is always happy to be a part of raising awareness and funding for research. "This is a fun and family-friendly event that helps an organization improve the lives of children and adults - we love being a part of that," said Montgomery. He enjoys hosting family-friendly events, but still keeping that party vibe alive. "Come out and enjoy a drink, bring your family, and have a little fun doing something terrific for the community," he said.
