Sen. Harris McDowell Receives Paul K. Weatherly Award

Delaware Technical Community College's Board of Trustees presented the Paul K. Weatherly Award to Sen. Harris B. McDowell III, D-Wilmington North, June 20, for his strong support of the college's mission, goals and students.

The award recognizes McDowell's long-standing advocacy of community college education and access, his understanding of the critical role community colleges play in workforce development, and his recognition and support of Delaware Tech. President Mark Brainard said, "Sen. McDowell exemplifies the ideals of the community college spirit and has been an exceptional ambassador of Delaware Tech and community college education. He is a longtime proponent of educational access as the founding father of the Student Excellence Equals Degree scholarship program that he worked tirelessly for 10 years to implement before it was successfully launched in 2005."

The Paul K. Weatherly Award Recognizing Excellence was created in 1995 to honor individuals who have made outstanding contributions to Delaware Technical Community College and who best exemplify the ideals of the community college spirit. This meritorious award is the highest honor presented by the college. Past recipients include 1995, Jack F. Owens; 1996, William A. Carter; 1997, William A. Faucett; 2000, James B. Porter Jr.; 2001, John M. Maiorano; 2006, Robert J. Laskowski; 2008, the Hon. Ruth Ann Minner; 2010, Howard R. Layton, posthumously; 2011, Dr. James R. Soles, posthumously; and 2014, Dr. Orlando J. George Jr.
